Councilwoman Hahn Calls for Marathon to Return to March

Responding to low participation, limited broadcast availability and complaints from runners, Councilmembers Tom LaBonge, Janice Hahn and Bill Rosendahl sought today to change the date of the 2010 Los Angeles Marathon back to its traditional time slot on a Sunday in March.

A new marathon contractor, LA Marathon LLC, had moved the 2009 race date to Memorial Day to appease clergy whose houses of worship are located along the 26.2 mile route.  Ministers and priests have long complained that their congregants can’t attend services on Marathon Sunday because of the many street closures required by a foot race through the city.
