Councilwoman Hahn Urges DHS Secretary Napolitano to Focus on Port Security

By Janice Hahn - Posted on 14 April 2009

Councilwoman Janice Hahn pressed the issue of port security and facility upgrades during the visit of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to Los Angeles.

"In meeting with Secretary Napolitano today I urged her to place more of a focus on Port security because any interruption in Port operations would be devastating to this country," said Hahn.  "I expressed that the Port is currently being shortchanged out of security dollars. Customs brings in $12 million a day, and I'd like to see a percentage of that money stay at the Port, where it's generated."

Councilwoman Hahn also discussed the new biometric security system with Secretary Napolitano.  The new system is slated to go into effect today, though many port workers still have not requested or received their Transport Workers Identification Card.  The Daily Breeze discusses the issue here.

A detailed account of Secretary Napolitano's full visit can be found here in today's Los Angeles Times.
