Councilwoman Janice Hahn joins Mayor Villaraigosa in welcoming green technology to Harbor City
By - Posted on 25 February 2009

Councilwoman Janice Hahn stands next to one of the new electric trucks that will be servicing the Port of Los Angeles. These heavy-duty electric trucks, manufactured in Harbor City, can tow a 60,000-pound cargo container and are the first zero-emission trucks at any port in the world. Balqon with produce 120 electric trucks out of its Harbor City facility, while creating 50 new green collar jobs by April alone. Click here to listen to Councilwoman Hahn's interview with NPR about the new zero-emission trucks.

Councilwoman Hahn Calls for Wrong Way Spikes on Freeway Off Ramps
Last week, Sgt. Curtis Massey, an upstanding, decorated member of the Culver City Police Department – and a family man with a wife and three children – was laid to rest after being struck head-on by a driver speeding along on the wrong side of the 10 freeway. This was a terribly unfortunate tragedy that I believe could have potentially been avoided.
While we clearly need to do more to prevent people from driving while intoxicated, I propose that we consider a back-up safety measure to keep those with clouded judgment from driving in the wrong direction on our freeways.
Why not add wrong way tire damage spikes to freeway exits, so that anyone who attempts to get on at an off ramp will immediately have their tires disabled? While this wouldn’t completely solve the hazards created by inebriated drivers, it would be a simple measure that would prevent this sort of senseless tragedy from happening in the future. A precaution such as this one would also raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence by serving as a constant reminder of the reasoning behind them.
Some may balk that such an idea would be too radical, but it is important to remember that in the 1960’s, Call Boxes were considered radical when my father first proposed them. The Kenneth Hahn Call Box system went on to provide many years of safer travel on our highways, though its utility has now mostly been replaced by cell phones. People also rejected the idea of freeway meters on onramps when it was first proposed, but over the years, it has proven to be an invaluable safety measure.
We live in an enormous city where we all face numerous dangers in our daily lives. I think exploring the possibility of putting in wrong way tire damage spikes on freeway off ramps would be just one more simple way to help reduce the traffic hazards that Angelenos face every day.
I realize that we are in extremely tough budget times, but what could be more priceless than saving lives? I think it’s time for Caltrans to take action and install wrong way tire damage spikes on Los Angeles’ off ramps.

Campaign To End Illegal Dumping In Watts
By Janice Hahn - Posted on 08 February 2009
While launching the "Don`t Dump On LA" campaign in Watts, Councilwoman Janice Hahn urged residents to report illegal dumping.
After years of hard work, it was a great day when I gathered with Mayor Villaraigosa, members of the Charles Mingus family and the Watts community to open the brand new Charles Mingus Youth Art Center, located next to the Watts Towers.Councilwoman Hahn, Mayor Villaraigosa and Sharon Mingus cut the ribbon on new art center. For years, we have been working to stop gang violence in Watts and have had great success. But, we cannot expect to maintain this peace and we cannot expect our kids to say no to gangs if we cannot give them something to say yes to. With the new art center, we are giving them something to say yes to. Young people from Watts will be able to come here to take classes, receive instruction.

Councilwoman Hahn Kicks Off Groundbreaking of Wilmington Buffer Zone
By - Posted on 03 February 2009
This weekend, I was on hand to launch the groundbreaking of the Wilmington buffer, 30 acres of beautiful, landscaped open space that will serve as a barrier between the Port of Los Angeles and the community.
For too long, the residents of Wilmington have had to endure the hardships and inconveniences of having Port operations situated right in their backyard, without any real benefits to the neighborhood. But thanks to many, many years of unwavering dedication and activism on the part of the Wilmington community, things are about to change for the better.
By the end of next year, trails, footbridges, a picnic area, a fountain, and an adventure playground will be built and ready for the enjoyment of the Wilmington community. Art installations and performance spaces will also be incorporated. The area will be a safe, beautiful place for whole families to gather, relax and play.
So many people from the PCAC and the Wilmington Community Advisory Committee worked incredibly hard to make this project a reality. I would especially like to recognize Ken Melendez, Eleanor Montano, Frank Herrera, and Gary Kern for their remarkable committment throughout this process.
