Councilwoman Hahn Honors Lori Moilov on Earth Day!

By Janice Hahn - Posted on 30 April 2009

I celebrated Earth Day this year by honoring a young woman who, at a young age, has already done more than most of us to preserve and protect the planet.  Lori Moilov is a San Pedro-based activist who last year started a non profit organization, Play City Beach Bash www.playcitybeachbash.org

The organization is intended to give inner city kids the opportunity to enjoy beach-related recreation activities, while also learning about the ocean and the importance of coastal stewardship.

I honored Lori at the city's Earth Month Awards Breakfast, where each Councilmember was given the opportunity to recognize an individual who's made an outstanding contribution to the environmental enrichment of the city of Los Angeles.

Port of Los Angeles Voted "2008 Port of the Year"

I am happy to announce that The World Cruise Center at the Port of Los Angeles has been designated “2008 Port of the Year” by Princess Cruises passengers. The award is decided by a tally of the highest passenger satisfaction scores. We celebrate this honor, which recognizes our port for service, facilities and personnel that have enhanced the passenger experience. The Port of Los Angeles is home to two Princess ships, and we look forward to continuing a successful working relationship with them!

Councilwoman Hahn Urges DHS Secretary Napolitano to Focus on Port Security

By Janice Hahn - Posted on 14 April 2009

Councilwoman Janice Hahn pressed the issue of port security and facility upgrades during the visit of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to Los Angeles.

"In meeting with Secretary Napolitano today I urged her to place more of a focus on Port security because any interruption in Port operations would be devastating to this country," said Hahn.  "I expressed that the Port is currently being shortchanged out of security dollars. Customs brings in $12 million a day, and I'd like to see a percentage of that money stay at the Port, where it's generated."

Councilwoman Hahn also discussed the new biometric security system with Secretary Napolitano.  The new system is slated to go into effect today, though many port workers still have not requested or received their Transport Workers Identification Card.  The Daily Breeze discusses the issue here.

A detailed account of Secretary Napolitano's full visit can be found here in today's Los Angeles Times.

Councilwoman Hahn Speaks Out At Planning Commission Meeting on Ponte Vista

By Janice Hahn - Posted on 10 April 2009

Yesterday I spoke out at the Planning Commission meeting on Ponte Vista, saying that I felt the project was still too large for the area, and urging the developers to heed the recommendations of planning staff and return to the table with a smaller project as soon as possible.  I want to see a project built at the site, and I want to see good paying construction jobs created in the area.  However, I believe that the project has to be something the community can live with, particularly in terms of traffic congestion.

After reviewing the plan and hearing my remarks as well as extensive public comment, the Planning Commission denied the plan and asked the developer to return in three months with a plan that would reduce the number of homes to between 775 and 886.   Read more about it in the LA Times

Councilwoman Hahn Calls for Marathon to Return to March

By Janice Hahn - Posted on 8 April 2009

Responding to low participation, limited broadcast availability and complaints from runners, Councilmembers Tom LaBonge, Janice Hahn and Bill Rosendahl sought today to change the date of the 2010 Los Angeles Marathon back to its traditional time slot on a Sunday in March.

A new marathon contractor, LA Marathon LLC, had moved the 2009 race date to Memorial Day to appease clergy whose houses of worship are located along the 26.2 mile route.  Ministers and priests have long complained that their congregants can’t attend services on Marathon Sunday because of the many street closures required by a foot race through the city.

Councilwoman Hahn Welcomes Disney Cruise Lines to Port of Los Angeles

By Janice Hahn - Posted on 01 April 2009

Councilwoman Janice Hahn yesterday welcomed Disney Cruise Lines’ plans to base one of their cruise ships out of the Port of Los Angeles, beginning in 2011.

The 964-foot-long Disney Wonder, which is currently based in Port Canaveral, Fla., will move to San Pedro to make room for two new cruise ships that will begin operating out of Florida in 2011 and 2012.

“Particularly in this very difficult economy, this news could not be more welcome.  The Disney Wonder will not only draw tourism to the area and provide an affordable vacation option for local residents; it will also create a significant number of much-needed jobs.  Finally, we will be able to call the Port of Los Angeles ‘the happiest port on earth.’”

It is estimated that the arrival of the Disney Wonder could create as many as 2,600 jobs within five years, the majority of which would revolve around the port hospitality industry.

The Disney line would become the fourth cruise line to launch from the Port of Los Angeles, following in the footsteps of Royal Caribbean, Princess and Norwegian cruise lines.
