Councilwoman Hahn Celebrates LA's Best and TopSail Youth Sailing Program

Yesterday, I celebrated the LA's BEST after school program and the TopSail Youth sailing program with young participants at Ports O' Call Village, and honored generous program donor Norman Swanton of Warren Resources, Inc.  The kids had just come back from a sailing trip around the Port of Los Angeles, and had the tell tale wind blown hair and enthusiastic smiles to prove it!

LA's Best and TopSail are both dedicated to expanding opportunities for young people in Los Angeles, and for helping children realize their full potential.  I can't think of a more worthy cause!

Councilwoman Hahn Dedicates Wilmington Vest Park

Councilwoman Hahn, joined by City Attorney Carmen Trutanich, LAPD officers and community members, cuts the ribbon on the new park.

Councilwoman Hahn honors community activist Salvador Lara at the ribbon cutting.

The sun was shining all over Los Angeles yesterday, but it shined especially brightly on the Cruces Community in Wilmington.

Over the last two years, there have been a lot of positive changes in the neighborhood.   Just a short while ago, the park at Watson and O Street was a dilapidated area where there was a lot more drug dealing than playing going on.   But two and a half years ago, the city and law enforcement came together with the community to say enough is enough.

And now, crime is way down in this community.  My office has worked to repave streets, improve lighting and fix sidewalks.  We now have a beautiful mural here for all to enjoy.  And the community has truly banded together to make this neighborhood a place to be proud of.

Yesterday, we dedicated this beautiful park, where kids in the community will have a safe, friendly place to play.  They will be able to enjoy a state-of-the-art playground with all-new equipment, including swings, slides, climbing structures, and a brand new play surface.

What’s been done here is a powerful testament to what the will of the community can do when everyone works together to achieve a common vision.  And the new park has been a great coordination of efforts on behalf of residents and city departments.

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday, and I hope that all of the children in the neighborhood will enjoy this park for many years to come!

Councilwoman Hahn Attends Grand Opening of New Police Administration Building

Councilwoman Hahn and LAPD's Sergeant Emada Castillo at the ribbon cutting.

On Saturday, I attended the ribbon cutting for the LAPD's new police administration building in downtown Los Angeles.  It's a beautiful new structure that I'm sure will serve the police force and the community very well for years to come.  The state-of-the-art new facility has a beautiful fountain and garden in front of it for everyone to enjoy, two acres of green space behind the building which is also open to the public, and a rooftop garden on top of the building.  Now we just need our new police chief to go along with it!

During the ceremony, SWAT officers draped a giant flag over the top of the building and then rapelled ten stories to the ground.  It was a spectacular and moving sight to behold!

I'd like to encourage everyone to stop by and take a look at the new headquarters next time you're in downtown Los Angeles.  It's not just the LAPD's facility -- it's everyone's facility.

Councilwoman Hahn Lauds Approval of Bradley Terminal Construction Contracts

I am very pleased that the Airport Commission approved the construction contracts for the Bradley Terminal modernization at LAX.  Finally, we will be bringing LAX up to the standards expected of a world class city -- and we'll be doing it the right way!  With new gates to accomodate the next generation of airplanes, new concessions, and a new customs area.

Click here to read what I had to say in the LA Times and the New York Times .  Also, listen for me on KPCC's AirTalk with Larry Mantle.

Councilwoman Hahn Supports ILWU Workers' Efforts to Aid Samoan Tsunami Victims

Yesterday I spent the morning on the docks with ILWU workers who volunteered their day at the Port of Long Beach to load containers bound for Western Samoa, with food, water, and other supplies for the thousands of victims of the recent tsunami.

These men and women dedicated their day to serving others.  They truly inspire me!

Councilwoman Hahn Attends California High Speed Rail Event

Councilwoman Hahn and Governor Schwarzenneger at the High-Speed Rail Authority Press Conference

October 2, 2009

Today, I attended the California High-Speed Rail Authority's press conference to announce California's application for over $4.5 billion in federal stimulus funding to get the project built.  In November, voters approved Prop 1A in order to finally bring a state-of-the-art high speed rail network to our state.  This funding will be a major boost for the project, and will create much-needed jobs.

We've been very successful at moving goods in California, now we have to do better at moving people.  High speed rail will be our ultimate people mover!
