Councilwoman Hahn Moves to Regulate Placement of Cell Phone Towers in Los Angeles

This week, I asked city departments to review Los Angeles' participation in an agreement which preempts the city from having jurisdiction over cell tower installation on utility poles. The community is rightfully concerned about the recent installation of a tower across from Taper Elementary School. I support the opposition to the tower location, and will continue to work to take this regulatory power out of the hands of utility companies, and put it into the rightful hands of local communities.

Councilwoman Hahn Look Further into Taxing Medical Marijuana

As you've heard, there has been much heated debate regarding the City of Los Angeles' proposed medical marijuana ordinance. Several months ago I proposed a business tax on medical cannabis transactions. This tax would generate much needed revenue for the City of Los Angeles, while allowing safe, convenient access to the prescription marijuana that people need. In the midst of this dire economic crisis we must examine all possible sources of income for our cash-strapped city, and a business tax similar to the City of Oakland's, would help us achieve this goal. With this in mind, I have asked for an examination of the most feasible way to tax marijuana in the City of Los Angeles, that would work with the pending new ordinance.

Gang Alternatives Program Luncheon

We had a wonderful luncheon on November 12th, in support of the Gang Alternatives Program. Thank you to all the board members, sponsors  and supporters that were in attendance. This program has been very successful, and has allowed thousands of kids to live gang-free and flourish in positive areas of their lives. While we have had some success in out-recruiting these gangs, there is still much work to be done and we must not rest. Again, thank you to everyone for all of your support.

New Panda Express in Harbor City Area

I was very pleased to welcome Panda Express to the Harbor City community on November 12th. It is wonderful to see a family owned business investing in our community and I thank founder Andrew Cherng for bringing this wonderful dining concept to our neighborhood. Not only will this new location offer great food at reasonable prices, it will also create new job opportunities for area residents.

Councilwoman Hahn Ramps up Collection of City Debt

Today I paved the way for the City of Los Angeles to collect on  debt that has been owed  to the city for quite some time. In these extremely tough budget  times, the city should be focusing more attention  on collecting this large amount of outstanding debt. We will also be reaching out to local collection agencies to collect some of this debt, which will help create jobs in the City of Los Angeles. We have reached out to over 50 Los Angeles based collection firms as part of this effort.

Councilwoman Hahn Brings New Pocket Park to Watts

Last Friday, I secured approximately 5,000 square feet of city-owned land for a pocket park in Watts.  The park will be located at the intersectio of East 115th Street and Arvella Grigsby Place in Watts.

The park will be named Grigsby Park, after Mrs. Arvella Grigsby, who has been a community leader in South Los Angeles for over forty years.  The park will provide a much-needed green, open space for the Watts community to enjoy, while also honoring Mrs. Grigsby, who sets an example for the entire neighborhood in everything she does.

Councilwoman Hahn Welcomes Chief Charlie Beck

I am very pleased with the appointment of Charlie Beck as Los Angeles' new Chief of Police.  Charlie Beck is the right man to lead the LAPD right now . He is both a cop's cop and a people's cop.

I worked with Charlie during one of the darkest moments in Los Angeles history -- the tragic killing of 14-year-old Cheryl Green.  Charlie ensured that we caught the gang members responsible for her senseless death, and joined me in reaching out to the community -- he even provided his cell phone number to concerned residents.

There is no doubt in my mind that he will continue the great strides in reduced crime and improved community policing that we have seen under Chief Bratton.
