“A Birthday Regale” Summer Exhibition
Beginning on June 5, 2010 through September 12, 2010, the Banning Museum will mark the 180th anniversary of Phineas Banning’s birth. The summer exhibition, “A Birthday Regale” is set in 1880, the year Phineas Banning turned 50. The exhibit features a patriotic themed birthday dinner. Period clothing for the late 19th century is on display. Featured are four elegant women’s dresses, all silk, in excellent condition; two from the 1860s, one from the 1870s and one from the 1880s. This is an exhibit you won’t want to miss this summer season.
Tours run Tuesday-Thursday, at 12:30pm, 1:30pm and 2:30pm with an additional tour on Saturday and Sunday at 3:30pm. Tours during the month of July are restricted. Please call for availability. Area Charter Schools Now Accepting Applications
Alliance is non-profit charter management organization that has opened and operates a collection of top ranking high-performance public schools within underachieving and low income communities in the city of Los Angeles. The organization currently operates 11 high schools and 5 middle schools and plans to open new charter locations in Watts in 2010-2011. Tuition is free and open to all students in California. LACoMAX
LACoMAX is a free service provided by the Environmental Programs Division of the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works. The primary goal of LACoMAX is to conserve landfill space by helping businesses, organizations, and institutions find alternatives to the disposal of valuable materials which are presently discarded as waste.
Users of this materials exchange service can browse and post listings of a wide variety of available and wanted materials. Listings include common items such as furniture, electronics, and household goods as well as more uncommon items like unused paint and/or construction equipment. The listings also contain contact information, allowing you to make direct contact with the listing party. All exchanges are coordinated between the two interested parties.

Marine Mammal Care Center in Desperate Need of Volunteers!
The Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur is inneed of volunteers and supplies in the coming months as it copes with a record breaking load, currently caring for more than 200 sick and injured animals at its facility. Volunteers must be 18 years or older. The Center also needs light corn syrup and safflower oil, purchasable at grocery stores, which are used as sugar and fat supplements for weaker animals.

Eldora Winston
Eldora was a resident of the Watts for 56 years. She was a devoted and faithful servant of Mt. Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles where she served in the usher ministry, church secretary, clerk, reporter, and taught Sunday school, she was also a member of the Mission Ministry and served as the president of the Senior Usher Ministry for more than forty years.
She was also an active member of the Watts Community Development Advisory Committee (WEDAC), the clean-up/beautification of South Central Los Angeles, and youth programs, such as summer jobs, Big Brother, drug eradication and numerous charities for the homeless. Eldora received countless awards and recognition for her tireless dedication to improving the lives of others.
Michael Grande
In memory of Michael Grande of Harbor City who passed away on vacation in Tulare County at the age of 47.
Mr. Grande, a father of three, jumped into the river to help save his son from drowning. He was able to save his son’s life by pushing him towards the shore, but was overcome by the currents and swept away. Mr. Grande will be greatly missed.

In the memory of 4 year old Alexander and 15 year old Joel Flores who were tragically killed on June 13th at a truck wash in Wilmington as they prepared to help their father wash his truck. Alexander and Joel will be deeply missed.
